Cheoah River...recreational release
I took these vids early last fall. The interplay of the rivers, dams, and their reservoirs around here fascinates me. It was fun to see the Cheoah River running relatively high. I looked it up, and they are having 20 such releases on the Cheoah this year. There's already been four.

Last Fall I checked out the Durhamtown Tellico offroad park just outside of Murphy, NC. It's a nice area, but I'm not the off road hero that I used to be, and some of the trails were a bit out of my comfort zone. Better suited for a much lighter bike. Or a 4 wheeler!

Kenda 270 Dual Sport Tire

This vid won't be of much interest unless you're looking around for a capable, and fairly inexpensive rear tire for your dual sport bike. I didn't show it (should have done), but I have a Kenda 270 on the front as well. After over 2000 miles, it's showing hardly any wear at all. Good tires.

Helen, Ga. Wet and Twisty!

Just showing a bit of "down town" Helen, Georgia, and a couple miles of twisties to the north on rt 17. A pretty misty and rainy day, so no great scenery or spirited riding going on. Kind of a bore maybe, but this also marks the fist time that I've ever attempted to upload a vid from a laptop while still on the road, so I figured I'd give it a go.

The Back of the Dragon : AKA VA rt 16
Просмотров 1,3 тыс.11 лет назад
Rt 16 between Marion and Tazewell, VA is a pretty cool stretch of road to take a pass or two on. Nice scenery, and some very twisty bits. That said, I don't know that I would recommend making a huge detour on your trip to check it out. Many of the tight switchbacks are blind, and tend to have a lot of gravel dragged out into the apexes. A fun piece of road though, and certainly worth a go shoul...

The shift lever on my DR650 disappeared early on the first day of my spring ride in western NC. My fault for not giving the bike a good going over for a while. Nothing super special here, but riding down this lane was kind of interesting for me. This "development" sits on the TN-NC border, kind of behind the Deals Gap motorcycle resort. At present, It's a much better ride going the opposite way that you came (south or easterly...from Cosby to Waterville).

    Seems beyond odd to me that you would move water 10 miles only to run power back out in the same direction. Then you have a concrete access tunnels. Could this have been a cover for an underground facility project? If not then why not build the power station at the dam. It's easier, faster and cheaper to set cables and move power then it is to dig tunnels, run pipelines and move water.

    • @dprider02
      @dprider02 4 года назад

      I'm not an engineer, but I suspect it has to do with the height the water drops to the power house. By digging the tunnel and building the power house where they did, they got an additional 200 feet or so of drop. There are several dams in this area where the water runs for miles through conduits and tunnels before reaching their respective power houses.

    Partly by accident I ended up on a shortcut across this, which is gravel and eroded asphalt tracks, but on the TN side of the state line (Tobes Creek Road, one of the "driveways" you passed on the right). I didn't realize even the "primary" route looping through the edge of NC, Mount Sterling Road, was also gravel up until the TN state line. So this means TN-32 is not accessible by any all-paved route from the east/south. The pavement on TN-32 begins right at the state line. I have to assume the Tennessee state roads authority thought NC would do the same, given that it's well maintained on the TN side. Interesting oddity (ok, fine, I'm a roadgeek) but this probably explains why so few consider it a Must Ride road; you have to be comfortable with taking on about a mile and a quarter of gravel no matter which way you take to get there (Mount Sterling or Tobes Creek Roads). I'll have to revisit this one soon. My ride on Tobes Creek Road: ruclips.net/video/fP0GSxZeb4o/видео.html

    • @dprider02
      @dprider02 6 лет назад

      Probably because I actively seek out unpaved roads to ride, I never really gave much thought to the gravel access to rt 32 having to do with how lightly that road is traveled. I always figured that it was mostly due to the road not really being on the way to anywhere! I'm sure you're right though...not being able to access it (or exit it) from its eastern end without hitting gravel no doubt puts a lot of people off. I rode it again as part of a loop about a year ago, and once again I saw zero motorcycles and maybe 2 cars. The cars were locals no doubt!

    • @ToddVierling
      @ToddVierling 6 лет назад

      dprider02 I've started doing the same ever since first trying the semi-ADV nature of the CB500X. Actually I've been fascinated with unpaved roads to the middle of nowhere for a long time and have spent plenty of time in the Blue Ridge mountains by car, but didn't apply it to two wheels until now. One way to find unpaved *through* roads is to look at Google Maps (in a desktop browser), and click the Street View stickman icon. See where there is a road that has Street View (blue overlay line) on both ends but *not* in the middle. In the majority of cases this is where the Google car turned around because the pavement ended. However, I found that whoever was driving the Street View car in 2007-2008 in western NC and parts of Eastern TN was more adventurous and actually went up many lesser-maintained roads so you can see that fact right from the captured imagery. (Tellico Road, for instance. That's a doozy!) Either way it's a good resource to find 'em on top of the usual satellite picture scrutiny.

  • @ToddVierling
    @ToddVierling 6 лет назад

    Ooh, that signed Forest Road 81 is Old Santeetlah Road. As it's so close to the Dragon and the loop around Lake Santeetlah connecting to the Skyway, I've been looking for an on the ground view of this for a while (to see if it's suitable for my CB500X with 80/20 tires). Looking really good there. Similarly for the southward 1-lane, one-way exit from Cades Cove (Forge Creek Road/Parson Branch Road). The northward Cades Cove exit road (Rich Mountain Road), letting out in Townsend TN, looks *a lot* more challenging, with nine miles of tighter and steeper switchbacks than the Dragon... on gravel.
